Weekly update

On Thursday we benefitted from the experience of a level three SCPF judge. Rob de Ruiter, our friend, neighbour and President of Bognor Regis Camera Club, who gave us a fair and thorough judging of a wide variety of images, from abstract to street to wildlife and more. The importance of expressive quality was brought out in Rob’s use of phrases such as ‘you get the impression’, ‘the sense’, ‘the feeling’. He talked about what the image said to him, his perception of the story behind the image and often drew parallels from his own experience. Suggestions for compositional and technical improvements ranged from removing distractions and bright spots to considering colour, whether too saturated or, if very muted, considering monochrome conversion.

He also advised us to make a distinction between personal memories and records, versus suitable competition images. He also emphasised the importance of being clear what you want the viewer to focus on, through appropriate use of depth of field, lighting, colour etc.

It was an enjoyable and informative evening, nicely topped-off with a touch of humour. The image featured is Brian’s ‘Passing by’, which scored 10.
