Michael Palmer Double FRPS
I’m so very pleased to tell you that Michael Palmer, not satisfied with his Fellowship in Contemporary, has just secured a second FRPS in Visual Art – many, many congratulations Michael!
The panel, entitled Sensationally Ugly, comprises 20 images of Grafton Car Park, which is, as Michael puts it Brutalist Architecture of the very worst. His aim was to soften its harsh and foreboding brutal appearance to one of interest and mystery by way of an imaginary Expressionistic makeover inspired, in part, by the work of Edvard Munch.
Those who know Michael’s very distinctive personal style will recognise some similarities between the two panels, although the first was black and white, this in a muted colour range and the subject matter is quite different. The visual similarities between two panels exemplify so well the particular requirement of the RPS for a Statement of Intent, which is a particular requirement of RPS distinctions and define which genre submissions should be entered into. You can see a mono version of his panel hanging plan below.
Michael will tell you the hard work behind his success, and the satisfaction this well earned second distinction has given him. As it’s just over two years since Michael’s first successful panel so that’s very well done indeed.
