Scores 2nd Club PDI Competition 2017-18
Our judge, Andrew Mills, kindly made the journey up from Southampton to my house at Selsey on the 5th of March 2018 to mark this competition, which had previously been cancelled due to bad weather.
Andrew made written notes during the judging and I have typed them up for members to see his comments.
| First Name | Last Name | Title | Score | Comments |
| Michael | Harris | I’M Having a Good Day | 8 | Not sure B&W is best. Sharp , Background gives no sense of place – although not blank. Lighting very good. No hard shadows. Relaxed character. |
| Michael | Harris | Me and My Umbrella | 8.5 | Lovely portrait – no harsh lighting. Space and background – looks like a re-enactment. Lens length good. B&W sort of works – but could work in colour – too much clarity – or over sharpened. |
| Michael | Harris | Could Be a Tight Fit | 9 | Good use of B&W – background to indicate a sense of place and time – lighting good – no harsh shadows. He is tight in the frame. |
| Gary | Howes | A Face Well Lived in | 8 | Colour helps. Background provides no sense of place although not blank. The turban – well defined – expression uncomfortable – unimaginative. |
| Gary | Howes | White Throated Kingfisher | 8 | Lighting not bad – touch of background but not much – no sense of place. No behavior. |
| Gary | Howes | Indian Roller Bird, with Lunch | 8.5 | Good behavioral shot. Lighting OK but slightly uncomfortab;e – but gives time of day – low light. No background, but the wire indicates something. |
| Sarah | Nichol | Through the Rock | 7.5 | Interesting – slightly enigmatic. Led through, pathway is good. No focal point. No scale. Lighting – OK – but flat because light comes either from behind photographer or flash. It needs a vignette to contain the image. |
| Sarah | Nichol | Path Though the Rainforst | 8.5 | Well led through picture. Well noticed. Wetness gives qyuality – (richer possibly) Step in foreground – either in or out Awakward. No scale – needs a point of scale – person or animal. |
| Sarah | Nichol | Routin Lynn | 8 | Genarally good shutter speed – slight focal point. Frame is too close to the bottom of picture. Well seen composition. |
| George | Sayer | Hummingbird Lick | 10 | Shows behavior. Lighting excellent – no harsh shadow. Colour good – not overdone. Competition serendipitous but good two echoing shapes fits the bird – triangular strong angles and a background – not too out of ficus – we see a sense of place & space. |
| George | Sayer | Grass Snake | 8.5 | Lighting good. I like – DOF usage – focuses attention to head. Stick adds tension – but should be toned down. Slight vignetting would help. Good colour. |
| George | Sayer | Lizard Look Up | 8 | Too close to bottom of frame. Tree has good texture – leaf gives scale. Grown a new tail – good average shot. |
| Ken | Worrall | Rooms with a View | 8 | Slightly uncomfortable composition. Central point of focus lacks direction. Tonally excellent, suits B&W. Reflection is good – well observed, some good angles. |
| Ken | Worrall | For Goodness Sake Don’t Drop Your Keys | 9 | Would work better in B&W. Well seen.Well composed for street (including the woman & her shoes & her bag). Unusual street shot. |
| Ken | Worrall | Windows | 7 | Pattern – has no focal point. Exposure fine. Photoshop works OK. Reflections in windows OK. |
