Scores for Club/Intermediate PDI Competition

Our judge, Andrew Mills, kindly made the journey up from Southampton to my house at Selsey on the 5th of March 2018 to mark this competition, which had previously been cancelled due to bad weather.

Andrew made written notes during the judging and I have typed them up for members to see his comments.

First Name Last Name Title Score Comments
Helenka Boden Don’t Look Down 9 Like parallel upright – Like action. Colour good – lighting good – could be sharper. Like window covered in suds.
Helenka Boden Reflecting on the Past 7.5 Poor verticals, looks sharp. Interesting reflection/interesting angle. Insipid colour. No focal point. Interesting abstract bits. Neither abstract or descriptive.
Helenka Boden Rough Passage 8.5 Well caught. Colour good. Bit tight in the frame – could be stronger angle. Light suits subject.
Linda Bullimore Ben Nevis Range 7.5 Pretty but dull – sheep OK. Tree on left. Colour poor, taken at wrong time of day. Led well back to scene.
Linda Bullimore Lonely Camper 7.5 Wrong time of the day for light quality – dull. Landscape has some interest – sky OK. Tent helps.
Linda Bullimore Arctic Tern in the Farne Islands 8.5 Good record shot. Lighting is OK but dull. No background or sense of place. No behaviour captured – looks sharp. However, a lovely shot of a tern.
Michelle Duffy View Through a Window 8.5 Strange pixellation, nicely observed, Abstract quality very interesting – good try. Colour overdone but works. Texture – warm and pleasing.
Michelle Duffy Whisk in Motion 8.5 Very interesting abstract – brave attempt. There could be many ways to do this but this is as successful as any.
Michelle Duffy Camera Lights 9 Good abstraction – see through to reality. Very well seen & masterstroke to reduce to B&W. Top part could be richer in tone. Lovely shapes. Vignette works. Brave shot.
Hilary Featherstone Mongolia Here We Come 8.5 Lighting good – comes from behind. Key person a bit lost – but 3 people in good composition. Interesting angle. Perhaps needs a touch of vignette – lack base.
Hilary Featherstone Reach for the Stars 8 Interesting abstract. Colour good. Comparatively sharp where is should be. Good angles. Lacks detail – of place and information. Big white stripes work.
Hilary Featherstone Shiny Shopping 8.5 Well observed. Good attempt. Needs people to create dynamism. Floor is what amakes it, but rest is ill considered.
Justin Hadley Perros Guirec, Brittany 6 Reasonable angle. Taken at wrong time of day. Ominous sky – helps a little. Bit of a holiday snap.
Justin Hadley Chateau De Fougeres, Brittany 7.5 Taken at poor time of day for light. Well led into the shot. Buildings in confusion – Composition beginning to work but somewhat ill considered.
Justin Hadley House Between Rocks, Brittany 7.5 Taken at wrong time of day. Interesting subject – poorly handled. Foreground interest – gives a base.
Cheryl Marshall Bajan Corrie 7.5 Well observed. Angle awkward. Lower viewpoint would work better head height dull. Needs focal point to break the picture to create a better composition.
Cheryl Marshall Auckland Schoolgirls 9 Good light – good communication. Blown ribbon and angle created by skirt hems across the picture is excellent – bookends jackets. Shoes make the picture – Stronger base needed to empahsise shoes.
Cheryl Marshall Cyprus Shadows 8 Well observed. Good semi abstract. Interesting composition. Lacks an element.
Corinne Noyalet The Tree 7 Dull – attempt at sunset – but that would to be much more sensitive and delicate. Heavy and lacking detail. Sky is good – might work better in colour. Light on tree truck works.
Corinne Noyalet View from Saint Malo – Intra Muros 7 Good sky – good to have the horizon low to show off the sky. Pier is at an awkward angle & could have been used to lead into the shot more with the people on the pier as clear focal point. Not sure if colour version would have been better.
Corinne Noyalet Enjoying the View 8.5 Missed opportunity – all the elements are there but unfortunately unrealised. Overall a really good attempt & well observed. Lighting good – the right time of day.
Stephen Saunders Gone But Not Forgotten 7.5 Good idea but poorly executed. Lacks possibilities – not enough information, too much lack of DOF. Lighting good
Stephen Saunders Backlit Trees 8.5 Excellent lighting – taken at right time of day. Well seen. Angle of light good. Lacks a real focal point, bright lit tree helps.
Stephen Saunders Dan Atherton – Red Bull Hardline 10 Correct shutter speed for panning to produce speed in background and spinning wheeels and bike and rider are sharp. Good lighting. Biker stands out from background.
Brian Southward Paddleboarders at Sunset 7 Awkward composition – to edgy (near to edge). Good attempt to create interest. Beach redundant or should be more a part of the picture. Scene needed to be walked around for best viewpoint – bit lazy.
Brian Southward Celebrate Your Curves 7.5 Reasonable attempt at humour/street. Needs a real person. Light OK.
Brian Southward The Door Into Summer 7 Composition is beginning to work. Not helped by lighting. Lens choice is interesting – Way over-sharpened. Excessive noise in the sky.
