Thomas Peck is a keen landscape and architecture photographer who is a member of Loughton Camera Club in Essex. Tom writes for several magazines, Black & White Photography ‘onlandscape.co.uk’ and leads photo workshops around the world for Quest Photography ‘quest photo.co.uk’. His talk tonight is about the ‘Sublime in Photography’ a term that comes from the art world and applies fully to photography. We shall look at the history of the sublime in painting, then in the early days of photography particularly in the American West. We’ll look at several current themes, Ice, Mountains and Water, then how the sublime is being photographed today by Kenna, Sugimoto, Burtynsky and more, finally followed by a journey into the future. The presentation has a sprinkling of Tom’s photos alongside those of the greats. Tom says it’s something unusual and should create lively debate.
