DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first meeting of the season with an introduction to the distinctions offered by the Royal Photographic Society\, including a chance to see a number of recent successful portfolios by Club Members.  \nIf you are interested in raising your photographic game via the RPS routes\, which require the submission of a related set of images leading to the award of Licentiate\, Associate and Fellowship of the RPS\, come along and find out more. \nThe group provides support in understanding  the requirements the RPS\, with helpful critique of your images to ensure they meet the published criteria\, and for the two higher levels\, how to go about setting your project and the necessary ‘statement of intent’. \nWe also cover the magic of ‘panelling’\, that is how your set of images will fit well together\, creating the ‘additional’ image that makes a whole of the parts. This is a skill that will serve you well not just for RPS purposes but also for the Club’s exhibitions and the Print Panel Competition. \nThe group is led by Lorna Brown FRPS (in Visual Art)\, and supported by Janey Devine and John Bradshaw\, both also Fellows with considerable experience of the RPS distinctions process. Janey is a current  member of both the Travel and Documentary assessment panels and John is a past long-standing member of the Contemporary panel. \nWe are pleased to once again open this Special Interest group to no-Club Members at a charge of £4 \nThe featured image is from Paul Adams’s recent successful LRPS submission \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Photowalk - Dell Quay - boats\, pontoons and sunsets
DESCRIPTION:Dell Quay and its boats always sounds an easy one to me. But then again\, its a case of taking shots into the setting sun and light needs to be controlled somehow\, so maybe not so easy after all ….. \nSo\, Dell Quay – there are lots of small boats tied up just inshore and a very convenient slipway to take images of them from. As you walk north along the coastal path from the Crown and Anchor there are bigger boats\, also moored inshore. And there is the star of the show – a very large wooden hull of what was once a proud boat\, now only attractive to groups of photographers ……  Add in two pontoons (one is in the pic above) and the opportunties for photography are surprisingly good\, especially as its all over a short length of coast\, maybe 80m at most. \nSunset is at 1912  and High Water is at 1808 (neaps).  That means that we will be visiting over high water\, so there should be plenty of water. The setting sun in your face can be tricky to handle\, but at the same time the opportunities to add reflections of coloured sky to your image should be present. \nSo – boats\, pontoons and sunsets then. \nMeet at 1630 near the Crown and Anchor. That gives us two and half hours to chat\, take pics and maybe ask one or two of the more advanced members for advice or input. The aim is to stay until just after sunset\, depending on cloud cover and weather. For those who are more socially minded (who isnt) or food oriented (who isnt) the Crown and Anchor provides ample opportunity for both chat and nosh after the shoot. \nThe Crown and Anchors postcode is PO20 7EE. Parking is on road at the end of said road leading to the pub. Park where you can and walk to the pub. It is possible that you need to park a little way away from the pub and walk to it. On a Sunday around 4-5pm it shouldnt be too bad. \nYou will need walking boots as the pathway is uneven\, or wellies if you want to take advantage of the slipway in order to get up close and personal with the many small boats which should still be there mid September.  Either way\, bring wellies anyway\, it isnt a long walk back to the car to change footwear.  Obviously dress for the weather. \nKit? No special kit is needed\, I’d suggest that a standard lens is a good start point\, with a wider one being useful. Add tripods and filters should you feel the need. Neither of those will be absolutely necessary though. \nThink thats all\, as always my mobby is 07974 173345 (save it now in your phone) and if Ive missed anything do get hold of me  \nOh\, and one effort being made this year is to increase the informal training which goes on in the field\, so if you need help\, advice or truly sorting out\, do approach those in whom you trust to come help. SUMMARY:Photowalk - Bournemouth Air Show
DESCRIPTION:==========  subject to weather changes ========= \nThis year the Bournemouth Air Show has been delayed to early September. This is good news for us – kids are back to school\, weather is cooler\, clouds are in the sky;  all add up to a photographic treat at what is  one of the premier Air Shows in the Country. \nYes\, I know its a little way from Chichester\, but it really is worth it. It is. So give yourself a shake if the sofa looks tempting\, grab a friend\, share cars and petrol\, buy the train ticket\, make time in your diaries and get yourself there. You wont regret it. \nThe event is run over four days\, and without doubt the best day is Friday\, it has a full programme of flying\, er\, acts\, and – its not the weekend. So Friday it is. \nFriday will see the Red Arrows\, Typhoon (hold your ears)\, Queens flight (Lancaster\, Spitfire and Hurricane) and the Chinook. Flying timetables can\, do and will change but right now (24th Aug) there will also be Richard Goodwin (for me the outstanding photogenic display\, see the pic)\, The Blades\, The Wingwalkers\, Fireflies and The Swordfish.  \nEven better is that this is one of the few places where you are at eye level with the aircraft; they fly over the sea parallel to the beach whilst you – if you go with me – are at the highest spot on the coast road.  Even better is that I have found a place\, slightly elevated above the road. Its out of the way of other people; jostling for position with the wannabee who has the biggest white lens in existence just cant happen.  \nAnd its free!  Trains run freely and parking is easy; everyone else will have taken the train …… \nSo\, if you are tempted (really – dont miss it)\, the flying begins at 12.45 on Friday 2nd September\, in Bournemouth.  If you wish to be sure of getting access to the elevated spot (word has got out over the years) you may need to be there earlier. I shall probably aim to be there at noon – but there are no guarantees.  Parking is at Cotlands Road Car Park (BH1 3QW). The meet point and spot to get to is on East Overcliff Drive\, 20 metres east of its junction with Manor Road.    \nThe best way to describe the exact meet point is by using What Three Words – its address is pills.panic.villa \nWhat to bring?  Yourself\, appropriate clothing\, water. A camera and long lens. If you can deal with the hassle\, a folding chair or stool can be very handy indeed\, otherwise its a long time to be standing. SUMMARY:Exhibition Preview Meeting - Assembly Room in Chichester
DESCRIPTION:We will be celebrating the return of our Annual Exhibition to the Assembly Room\, Chichester with the Preview on Friday 5th August. This event for all Club Members\, their guests and our invited friends from across the wider photographic world\, features the presentation of the awards by our Judge for the Exhibition\, Chris Palmer\, FRPS; a preview of the digital entries and a first chance to see the  print exhibition of some 300 images by over 50 authors.  \nA special feature this year will be the showing of Graham Sergeant’s  award winning AV Beeswing. Graham\, who gave so much to the Club and held two Fellowships of the Royal Photographic Society\, died last month and is much missed.  \nThere is also a buffet supper and Club members are asked  to support the evening by bringing along a sharing plate to add to the mix. \nAfter our pandemic enforced three year gap\, we are very pleased to be greeting our invited guests from other clubs in Sussex and the  SCPF come to see what Chichester has to offer and to meet old friends. SUMMARY:Sams Sunflowers - Hayling
DESCRIPTION:Come snap some sunflowers. Sams Sunflowers\, a pick your own farm on Hayling\, has now opened its sunflower fields. Yep\, you can pick your own if so inclined\, but come along with camera in hand. Its a decent place\, loads of sunflowers\, other flowers as well\, but what makes it really handy is that there are usually two viewing platforms\, helping you get your eye above the flower heads. An entrance fee of £5 gets you into the fields and affords you parking to boot. On Thursday the fields are open to 9pm. \nThis counts as a Development Group meeting – which means images taken on this event may be shown for general approval and tumultuous applause at the first Tangmere session in September. So put your game face on. I will be more than happy to provide any guidance you feel you might need.  \n\n\n\nMeet on Thursday 4th August at 6.45pm in the car park. SUMMARY:Pre-Exhibition Members’ Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our Members’ Pre Exhibition meeting on Thursday 28th July\, held as usual at Tangmere Village Centre at 7.30pm. We’re hoping to see lots of you there not just for the enjoyment of being back together again\, but for some important Club business. \n\n\n\nThe meeting will be the first opportunity to see the exhibition catalogue (price £1) – and to see which of your entries have been accepted (no one has less than three print acceptances) and indeed to sneak a peek to see if you have been achieved any of the awards\, which will be presented at the Preview on Friday 5th August at the Assembly Room. The catalogue is quite a work of art and our thanks are due to Andy Dulson for the fabulous job he has made of it. \n\n\n\nThere will also be a short version of the PDI Show\, with thanks to Jeff Owen for that. Every PDI submitted has been accepted and during the exhibition you’ll be able to see all of those on the TV by the refreshments so you can sit an enjoy the showing with a coffee and some cake. \n\n\n\nAll the Certificates of Merit\, chosen by our judge this year\, Chris Palmer FRPS\, will be distributed at the Members’ Pre-Exhibition Meeting too and it will be good to have an enthusiastic audience to celebrate each other’s successes. \n\n\n\nWe know for those who haven’t exhibited before – and indeed those who perhaps only did it once before our enforced cancellations – that arriving at the Assembly Room on Friday 5th August to set up your prints can be quite daunting. To help with that you’ll find some guidance notes explaining how to go about it and we can give some key pointers at the Pre-Exhibition Meeting too. \n\n\n\nImportantly though we also need you there to take away the leaflets and posters that advertise the exhibition. You should distribute these as widely as you can – to neighbours\, friends\, local shops\, your hairdressers and the like so we can attract as many people as we can to come along and see our wonderful showing. \n\n\n\nWe’ll also have next season’s programme available for a first look what there is in store for our Thursday meetings\, as well as the key dates for competitions and the other exhibitions. \n\n\n\nAnd finally\, with the strange circumstances of the past two years\, we have some Trophy and Cup Certificates from the exhibitions in 2020 and 2021 which we will also be very pleased to present.

SUMMARY:Caroline Preece		Tools not Rules
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nCaroline Preece is the daughter of Margret Preece\, a long-standing member of our club.  In 2015 she gained her LRPS distinction and in 2019 she became a photographic judge and now judges at clubs across the UK.   This journey has taken her into the world of photography as a visual language\, visual design and the psychology of how we interpret the visual world around us and led her to reject the concept of rules altogether\, thinking instead in terms of tools.  If we understand the tools at our disposal we can then use them to better communicate through our photos. \n Her own photography is a reflection of both her life pre-Covid in London and her rural upbringing in a small country village.  On the one hand she is drawn to human elements and stories\, documenting everyday life\, chance occurrences\, and captured moments.  But then she seeks an escape from the hustle and bustle and creates minimalist landscapes and seascapes which for her represent ‘space to breathe’ away from the urban density of city life. She is a member of Loughton Camera Club which is on the London Essex border. \nHer talk is entitled Tools Not Rules. The objective of her talk is to introduce to people a different way of thinking about photography and composition. The first part of the talk covers photography as a visual language. In the second part she aims to provide club members with an understanding of the psychology behind how people interpret the visual elements within an image\, and the impact of their choices on the end image and how the viewer experiences it. The talk is based on psychology and is about empowering people to make informed decisions as opposed to worrying about rules and whether to break them.

SUMMARY:Club Photowalk - The Hawk Conservancy
DESCRIPTION:============== Note the date change to 8th May ============== \n  \nThe Hawk Conservancy is a dazzling place to go watch various kinds of raptors strutting their stuff.    \nIf you havent been there\, dont assume its just another place to go see birds on sticks. No such relaxing luxury. Instead you will be confronted with a series of flying shows\, getting better throughout the day and topped off with the amazing vultures\, red kites and the owls. All in open territory. And not a cage bar in sight. \nMeet in the car park of the Hawk Conservancy at a relaxed 10.15. That gives us 45 minutes to muster\, get through the check in\, orientate ourselves and get to the first talk/event at 11.00. The Centre is near Thruxton\, just west of Andover and the postcode for the Centre is SP11 8DY. For most of you the journey is likely to be just over an hour. \nThe flying schedule has changed a little from past years\, but  in outline it starts slowly at 11 and then immediately picks up pace\, carrying on to around 2.30 when there is a break for lunch. Either bring a packed lunch or eat (outside or in) at the Centre’s Cafe. Activities resume at 3.45 and finish at around 5.15. \nA full description of the events can be found on the website (www.hawk-conservancy.org) under ‘Visit’. Its also where you can prebook your ticket. Prebooking is advised\, as during Covid numbers have been restricted and that may well still be the case . A ticket price will be around £15. I’ve booked mine. \nDo bring a face mask\, it may still be required in indoors areas\, notably the cafe. \nApart from that\, bring a camera and a long lens. You wont need much else\, apart from spare batteries and cards. Brush up on your camera’s focus tracking functions (inward groan – landscapes dont tend to move much ….) and thats it. Oh\, and there is  a fair amount of schlepping from event to event and comfortable clothing and footwear is a necessity. \nThis will be a good one so press your credit card into action now – and thanks Lorraine for suggesting it \nAndy 🙂 \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:  \n \nBob is a past-president of Brighton and Hove Camera Club and an A-list judge who has judged photography all over the south-east. He  is a member of the Nature Photographers Portfolio\, and in conjunction with poet Wayne Visser\, produced his first book ‘African Dream’ in 2012. His diverse travel and wildlife photography has helped achieve a LRPS in 2000 and an ARPS in 2001.
