DESCRIPTION:I have been taking photographs for most of my life. My Father was an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society and I spent many happy hours with him in his darkroom when I was growing up. He was my inspiration. \nI specialise in photographing sport and music\, but also enjoy travel and street photography. Based near Salisbury\, I am one of the house photographers at The Joiners music venue in Southampton\, and photograph regularly for Hampshire Cricket Club\, Salisbury Football Club and Druids Lodge Polo Club. I have photographed some 25 different sports and am always looking for new opportunities. \nThis talk is about how to get started in the fields of music and sports photography and provides examples of what and doesn’t work. While fully appreciating the “what you see is what you get” approach\, I am much more interested in chasing an ever-elusive image that appears in my mind’s eye\, an image that conveys my feelings and emotions\, rather than remains a mere statement of fact. My favourite photography subjects are: flowers\, still life\, and also capturing my impressions when travelling. \nFlowers and still life are my favourite photography subjects. Still life in particular is perfect for a perfectionist like me – no one fidgets or makes faces\, no sudden gust of wind or some other quirk of ever-changing weather can spoil your shot. I have traveled to 65  countries so the last 18 months has greatly slowed me down due to covid but have started planning trips again. Matthew would spend free periods in the dark room developing and enlarging film that had been exposed using his grandad’s old Praktica camera.Since then Matthew has had success in a number of photographic competitions and was named Landscape Photographer of the Year in 2016. DESCRIPTION:Slawek is a freelance photographer specialising in landscape\, travel and architecture. Born and raised in Gdynia\, on the Baltic coast of Poland\, he moved to Brighton in 2007. The countryside around the city proved very inspiring and led him to develop his\, then novel and since often imitated\, style of photographing the South Downs with telephoto lenses. DESCRIPTION:I’ve always enjoyed visiting new places\, meeting new people and I suffer from an unquenchable desire to escape normality. For as long as I can remember I’ve always had the urge to get out and see the world\, experience new cultures and explore wild landscapes but it wasn’t until I started to travel the world that photography became one of my great passions in life. \nOver the past decade or so I’ve been able to travel extensively and experience many of the amazing gifts the planet has to offer. It’s these experiences that naturally led to me specialising in travel photography. Although it’s often the incredible landscapes that make people want to travel\, it’s the culture and interaction with the native people that I find the most rewarding. I love to take candid photos of people going about their everyday life. DESCRIPTION:Astrid is a freelance photographer and book author based in Surrey. She started to seriously engage in photography a few years ago\, when struggling to juggle the demands of family life\, motherhood and a stressful job. Spending time outdoors and photographing became her way of balancing life. \nInitially\, Astrid photographed almost exclusively landscapes\, drawing her inspiration from scenes in the natural world that evoke a sense of tranquillity and harmony. Often\, she’d be drawn towards the less obvious details in the landscape – such as shapes\, patterns or a particular colour – making them the primary subject of her images. In the last few years\, Astrid has become fascinated by street life and architecture and has photographed extensively in cities in the UK and abroad.

DESCRIPTION:  \n \nAnne took up photography in around 1984 and finds it difficult to put into words exactly what her ‘style’ is. Others have described her work as pastel or pale and interesting. They also comment that she sees pictures in places that others would pass by without a glance. She is best known for her ever-expanding series of pictures of lady’s public conveniences and for the fact that many of her pictures include a dog. Anne never passes by the opportunity for a photograph and takes landscapes\, natural history and travel photographs. Since around 2001\, Anne has concentrated on making alternative images in familiar locations such as Cuba \, taking perverse pleasure in the fact that nobody can guess the location.

SUMMARY:Caroline Preece		Tools not Rules
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nCaroline Preece is the daughter of Margret Preece\, a long-standing member of our club.  In 2015 she gained her LRPS distinction and in 2019 she became a photographic judge and now judges at clubs across the UK.   This journey has taken her into the world of photography as a visual language\, visual design and the psychology of how we interpret the visual world around us and led her to reject the concept of rules altogether\, thinking instead in terms of tools.  If we understand the tools at our disposal we can then use them to better communicate through our photos. \n Her own photography is a reflection of both her life pre-Covid in London and her rural upbringing in a small country village.  On the one hand she is drawn to human elements and stories\, documenting everyday life\, chance occurrences\, and captured moments.  But then she seeks an escape from the hustle and bustle and creates minimalist landscapes and seascapes which for her represent ‘space to breathe’ away from the urban density of city life. She is a member of Loughton Camera Club which is on the London Essex border. \nHer talk is entitled Tools Not Rules. The objective of her talk is to introduce to people a different way of thinking about photography and composition. The first part of the talk covers photography as a visual language. In the second part she aims to provide club members with an understanding of the psychology behind how people interpret the visual elements within an image\, and the impact of their choices on the end image and how the viewer experiences it. The talk is based on psychology and is about empowering people to make informed decisions as opposed to worrying about rules and whether to break them.
