Thursday 18th January

We’ve had quite a run recently of programme changes as speakers have had to call off, and we were all very sorry to hear Walter Benzie was unable to join us last night.  We were however, very pleased to welcome Leo Rich as our Second Advanced Print competition judge instead. Leo has a very distinguished photographic history with a wide range of accreditations, including among others,  ARPS, EFIAP/g, DPAGB and HonPAGB.  He’s a past President of the PAGB and many of us know him as the SCPF Awards Officer for PAGB accreditations where his support and interest in our attempts – and pleasure in our successes – has been much appreciated.

He’s a very thorough judge, spending time taking in our images and clearly enjoys doing so.  He’s told us he’s a ’emotive’ judge, rather than what he describes as a ‘technical’ judge and he certainly engaged with the emotional side of the work.  He was encouraging about breaking the standard rules, such as rules of thirds, the placing of horizons and has an appreciation of works that might be rather dismissed by others as mere ‘records’.  He added to the evening with a store of anecdotes, which along with the positive comments he made about all the images and his helpful critique got the competition programme of to a good New Year start.

Thanks to Jeff Owen who once again had the competition league table updated so quickly after the close of the meeting!
