We had a veritable masterclass in judging and photography itself last night when we welcomed Chris Palmer to judge the first round of the Advanced Print Competitions. As Chris says, you need to look into an image not at it, and his incisive analysis was so constructive with its advice and suggestions for improvements. Whether it was about colour, composition, printing, photographic and post-processing technique, the best choice of paper and how a well selected mount can enhance or detract from the finished product, there was so much to learn from Chris’s critique. He certainly marked across the range but his rationale for this was clear. All delivered in his friendly and humorous style – a real favourite with the Club. Thanks to Jeff for again getting the results up onto the website so quickly!

Peter Rocchiccioli gave a run down on the Club’s recent successes in inter-club print championships where – for the first time – the Club won the Plate in the PAGB Print Championships (joint with Rolls Royce). This makes Chichester one of the top 10 clubs out of 1000 nationwide – a real achievement for us. Credit to the photographers, whose work was on show last night, and indeed to the Selection Committee who have the unenviable task of putting together the right mix of images that meet the complex entry requirements. Peter also reported that we had come joint first with Winchester in the SCPF 1st Division print competition.

This Saturday sees the Sussex Photographic Federation PDI Competition at Burgess Hill. We reserve this competition for our Club and Intermediate classes to ensure there are opportunities for a wide range of our members to be entered for inter-club competitions. This does mean we go up against Advanced members from other clubs and frequently do very well demonstrating the breath of talent we can call on.
